The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is once again reaching into its deep pockets to support a utility-scale solar project. This time, the DOE is providing a $90.6 million conditional loan guarantee to Colorado-based Cogentrix of Alamosa for a planned high concentration solar photovoltaic (HCPV) project that is meant to be installed near the city of Alamosa in south-central Colorado.

MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., home of the New York Jets and New York Giants, is getting a major green face-lift in the form of a custom solar power system expected to add “a striking visual element” to the top of the stadium. The installation comes as the result of a new sponsorship agreement between the New Meadowlands Stadium Company, which manages the facility, and NRG Energy, one of the largest solar power developers in the country.

By now we’ve all heard the statistics: buildings account for 40 percent of U.S. primary energy consumption, more than the transportation sector, more than the industrial sector. Hoping to reduce that figure, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released the latest version of its energy saving modeling software, meant to help designers and architects build more energy efficient buildings.

Austrian-based motorcycle manufacturer KTM recently unveiled its new electric motocross bike, the Freeride. The bike features a 300 volt battery and a brushless, synchronous motor that supplies 29 horsepower and about 32 ft.-lb. of torque. In comparison, that’s about the same performance you could expect from a 125 cc, two-stroke bike, but with about twice the torque.

In Georgia, Epsten Group is expanding operations while keeping it green. This company – which specializes in architecture, interior design, LEED consulting, and energy modeling — was responsible for the the first LEED Platinum office building in Atlanta. Now it has expanded operations while adding another green feather to its cap with its new offices in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, which also has garnered Platinum certification from the U.S Green Building Council.

It’s hard to see a winner emerging from the solar industry’s ongoing internecine slugfest – unless you count the public relations people. SolarWorld and its six unnamed co-petitioners, allied as the Coalition for Affordable Solar Manufacturing (CASM), say that without protective duties on Chinese solar modules and cells, U.S. manufacturing jobs will be lost. Installers and others in the solar supply chain, under the banner Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy (CASE), say duties could spell the end of the PV boom that has created tens of thousands of U.S. jobs.
