R.E.M. - Talk about the History
R.E.M.'s first show in Dublin took place on December 4th, 1984, with support from The Lucy Show. Steve Wickham, then of In Tua Nua and later on The Waterboys played violin on Ghost Riders in the Sky. Fun fact from the SFX show: Michael wore a khaki legwarmer on his head for the entire show, supposedly to aide in helping his sore neck.

Hey Gabhan......... I would just love SFX show from you if possible. I was there - in fact I wrote a review of the gig for Melody Maker. 'Moon River' put the hairs standing on the back of my neck, I'd love to hear the whole thing again.
Thanks. Helen
I was at that show too. Steve Wickham also played on Rockville. the SFX (now sadly gone) was only half full that night. Helen, i have the show on tape if you want it.
Does your tape copy have 'Radio Free Europe'?? Hope to have the MP3s uploaded by Sunday night
I posted a review of this show's recording not too long here: http://remring.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=295&Itemid=...
It's actually one of my favorite shows from this era due to Steve Wickham's violin on the tracks, Ghost Riders in the Sky, Rockville, and Wolves, Lower. I will post those songs to the link that I have given in a few hours.
FYI. You can find them at the bottom of the page

Hi Gabhan,
It's probably a bit late to reply to your blogs here, but I'd love to have a listen to that '84 REM gig from the SFX. I was at it myself, my first ever proper gig. I still have my 6.50 (irish punts) ticket which i bought down at the Sound Cellar.
I can hardly remember the gig at this stage. After going through the songlist, I vaguely remember them playing something different at the end of the night. Something like Star-spangled banner or something. Correct me if I'm wrong, it was 24 years ago now, kinda fuzzy....
Since then I have only seen Stipey and the Boys twice, once at the not-so-good Green concert in the RDS, Dublin and the "Let's blow Oasis off the stage!" Monster gig at Slane.
The 1984 gig was kinda special though. So if there's any chance of you passing the mp3 on to me, it'd be great.
Thanks
